I’ve got nothing else to lose

Text: Matthew 14:22-29 KJV

"And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. 

And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus."

There had been a great manifestation and five thousand people were fed and Jesus wanted some time alone.

He forced his disciples to go into a ship while he sends the people away and afterwards join them on the other side.

Hear me: that other side could be a success in your marriage, business, carrier, and spiritual life, church growth, healing for you, your friend or a loved one. You know you have to get there on a boat at the master's command but what you didn’t know is that the water will disallow movement.

You may have tried prayers, fasting, joining the prayer band, becoming a member of the choir, made a feast, sponsored a crusade, travelled to the holy land, used olive oil, drank holy water, bought holy clothes and ties holy napkins, waist and wrist bands yet what you seek is still far from your reach.

The disciples of Jesus tried all they could, they tried out their skills, they commanded, made decrees, made confessions of faith, jumped up, turn around but yet the sea was against them. They finally gave up!

The fourth watch (3 am-6 am) when they had done all they could and gave up, resigned to fate, Jesus came to them walking on that same water that had hindered them all evening.

Watch this: the water was contrary until they recognized they had no more power to help themselves. Jesus kept praying on the mountain as long as they had the power to row.

You will not see God until you let go!
You will never experience his power until you have no more power of your own. The more you struggle, the more you drown. The more you fight, the more you lose.

God will not fight a battle you can win by yourself.

When they saw Jesus walking on the sea, they were more terrified, their fears were confirmed: “the storm was no ordinary one.”

They magnified the deities of the sea, they believed the stories they were told and the legends handed down from sailor to sailor. 

They believed they had seen an evil spirit and so they cried out in fear.

To assure them of their safety, Jesus spoke to them. He assured them and comforted them yet they were not sure what to believe. 

They know that Jesus had the power to multiply bread, turn water into wine, open blind eyes, cleanse lepers, and raise dead people, but to walk on water? That was too much for these frightened men to take in.

Peter having nothing more to lose asked a bold question that must have made the other 10 very uneasy. He said, “Lord if it’s really you; ask me to join you on the water.”

This question is worth a billion dollars. He would have probably said to himself “I have been tossed, almost drowned, seen a ghost and made up my mind that I will have a watery grave, what more do I have to lose?”

That level of resolve got him off the boat (His comfort zone, the place he has control) into the unknown. And yes he walked that water!

When you have something to lose, you cannot ask for the power to raise the dead, the power to heal the sick, the power to cast out devils, the power to do and go beyond limitations both natural and spiritual.
